Cards create effective way to get the word out about chapter events
Like many GCSAA affiliated chapters, the Everglades Golf Course Superintendents Association has struggled with low attendance at our chapter meetings, and like many boards the Everglades GCSA Board of Directors has tried just about every idea imaginable to reverse this trend. After sending out numerous surveys, making direct phone calls and using other polling techniques the excuses we heard from members ranged from the plausible to the ridiculous.
Determined to eliminate at least a few of the excuses, in 2001 the incoming Everglades GCSA President Matt Taylor presented the Everglades GCSA board with an idea. Taylor, Golf Course Superintendent at Royal Poinciana Golf Club in Naples, Fla., suggested that at each annual meeting we give those in attendance a 2 by 3 ½ inch card (business card size) that would list the meeting dates, event title and site for all of the chapter events for the upcoming year (cards are pictured below). The card also has the dates and location of the GCSAA conference and the dates for our state turfgrass association conference. On the flip side of the card is the Everglades GCSA mailing address, RSVP phone number and the web site address sandwiched between the Everglades GCSA and GCSAA logos. Taylor and the board were hopeful that this would eliminate the excuse we had often heard, “I never received the meeting notice”. Having the RSVP number on the card also helped solve another problem faced by many golf course superintendents associations - excessive on-site registration.
The card has been a huge success and was repeated by Taylor’s successors Jim Leiseberg, CGCS, 2002-2003 President and Kyle Sweet, CGCS, 2003-2004 President. Incoming President J. Mark Black, CGCS, has also prepared next year's card, which will be handed out at our annual meeting in a little over a month. The card has generated more awareness of the Everglades GCSA's upcoming meetings and events, and has helped our members plan accordingly. The Everglades GCSA is averaging 100 attendees at its monthly meetings.
