Donald E. Brooks, 64, died Dec. 28, 2007, at his home in Gardnerville, Nev. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Mr. Brooks became a deputy sheriff in Carson City and also was an entrepreneur, owning and operating several small businesses before discovering the golf business in 1983. That year, he and his partner Bob Townsend purchased Carson Valley Golf Course, which had been devastated by neglect and a recent flood and had only nine out of 18 holes in play. Mr. Brooks worked to quickly renovate the course and within a year had 18 playable holes. Over the next 19 years, he was the owner and superintendent of Carson Valley GC. He and his wife, Lynn, both worked to improve the layout. In 2003, Mr. Brooks retired and sold the course to his son, Tom Brooks, CGCS and 18-year GCSAA member, who continues to operate the course along with his wife, Manya. Mr. Brooks is survived by his son, Tom, and his wife, Lynette Brooks, 445 Foothill Road, Gardnerville, NV 89410-6537.
