John Miller Jr., 70, died July 17, 2008. Born in 1938 in New York City, Mr. Miller attended Cornell University and graduated with a degree in animal husbandry and horticulture. Mr. Miller, who moved to Arkansas in 1958, worked as a superintendent, cattle rancher, golf course designer, commercial builder and land developer. He designed The Turkey Mountain Course, now called the Course at Turkey Mountain, and the executive par-3 Cedar Glade Course, both in Horseshoe Bend, Ark. From 1985 through his retirement in 2000 he worked as superintendent for the city of Little Rock. In 1994, he received the Audubon Sanctuary Award for Hindman Park Golf Course, the first Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Golf Course in Arkansas. A 20-year GCSAA member, Mr. Miller also was a member of the GCSA of Arkansas, the Franklin Masonic Lodge #350, the Horseshoe Bend Kiwanis Club, Arkansas Realtors Association and the Faith Presbyterian Church of Horseshoe Bend, among other organizations. A licensed real estate broker for more than 35 years, he also operated a real estate business from 2000 through 2008, and in 2007, he published a book, “Bust Out,” which he wrote 18 years ago. Mr. Miller’s survivors include: three sons, John Miller III; James Miller and his wife, Teri; and John Wesley Miller; his daughter, Kathryn Anderson and her husband, Mike; a grandson, Liam Malcolm Miller; his sister, Nina Jo Griggs; and his wife of 50 years, Deanna Miller, 816 Leawood Drive, Horseshoe Bend, AR 72512.

James G. Vlassis, 78, died July 7, 2008. Born in 1930 in Saginaw, Mich., Mr. Vlassis attended Arthur Hill High School and served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He worked at numerous golf courses in Michigan over his career. He started as an assistant superintendent at Green Acres Golf Course, Brighton, in 1958. Two years later he got a job as head superintendent at Bridgeport (Mich.) Country Club. Mr. Vlassis, a 43-year member of GCSAA, then went on to work at Brae Burn Golf Club in Plymouth and Burroughs Farms Golf Club in Brighton. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jamie Jo Vlassis; his sister Elaine Chapman; and his brothers, Fred Vlassis and Thoedore Vlassis Jr. He is survived by his sister Vera Vlassis; sister-in-law, Marilyn Stanick; his children, Barry and Jayne Vlassis, Brian and Sue Vlassis, and Brad and Catherine Vlassis; seven granddaughters; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; and his wife, Sharon, 207 Inglewood Court, Linden, MI 48451-8952.
