Charles W. Burns, CGCS, 83, died Nov. 29, 2008. Born in 1925, Mr. Burns served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked for several years as a Professional Golf Association member and a superintendent. Through a varied career at many courses in Alabama, Texas, Louisiana and the Carolinas, he worked at Rock Hill (S.C.) Country Club in the early ’60s before moving on to Statesville (N.C.) Country Club and later Alabama College Golf Course in Montevallo, Ala., and Pineview Golf Club in Thomasville, Ala. In the early 1970s, Mr. Burns went to Laredo (Texas) Air Force Base Golf Club and the Marion Institute Golf Club in Marion, Ala. In the 1980s, he worked at Florence (Ala.) Golf and Country Club, Norman (Okla.) Golf Club, Waxahachie (Texas) Country Club and DuPont Employees Recreation Association in Orange, Texas. Mr. Burns, a 38-year GCSAA member, retired in 1988. He was preceded in death by his parents, William A. Burns and Lillian Burns, and a brother R.C. Bud Burns. Mr. Burns is survived by a daughter, Shari; two sons, Billy Burns and Gerald Burns; five grandchildren; his brothers and sisters Christopher Burns, Arlee Graham, J.L Burns, Hazel Morgan, and Helen Hill; and his wife of 55 years, Cleoneke “Nicky” Burns, P.O. Box 1786, Alachua, FL 32616.

Lonnie Pell, 61, died Nov. 10, 2008. Born in 1947, Mr. Pell was an affiliate member of GCSAA and an employee of SePro Inc., Carmel, Ind. He worked in the horticulture, golf course and aquatic industries for more than 35 years as an extension agent, business owner and sales professional. Mr. Pell was an avid gardener and a devoted family man. He is survived by his son, Nathan; daughters Samantha and Kentlee; a granddaughter, Alexis; and his wife, Peggy, 4604 Canard Rd., Melbourne, FL 32934.

Heath Peterson, 31, died Nov. 12, 2008. A nine-year GCSAA member, Mr. Peterson was an assistant superintendent at Glen Flora Country Club in Waukegan, Ill. As a junior in high school, he ran against and beat an incumbent for the Bettendorf (Iowa) Parks and Recreation park commissioner’s seat and served as a commissioner his last two years of high school. While completing a degree in turfgrass science from Iowa State University, Mr. Peterson had an internship at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort. After he graduated in 2001, he immediately got a job as an assistant at Eagle Ridge Inn and Resort in Galena, Ill. A year and a half later, he became the head superintendent at that facility. In 2004, Mr. Peterson went to Freeport (Ill.) Country Club where he also served as the head superintendent. He worked there until 2007. Mr. Peterson’s father, Brad Peterson, is a superintendent at Palmer Hills Golf Course, Bettendorf, Iowa.
