GCSAA honors certified superintendents
Twenty-two individuals received special recognition Feb. 6 during the GCSAA Education Conference and Golf Industry Show for reaching the 25-year mark for maintaining their certified status through the GCSAA certification program.
Established in 1971, this program bestows the professional designation Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) and allows superintendents to be recognized for meeting superior standards of proficiency in golf course management through experience, education, testing and performance. By meeting stringent renewal requirements every five years, CGCSs demonstrate their ongoing desire for continuing education and commitment to their profession and to providing the best playing conditions possible at their facilities. Since the program’s inception, GCSAA has certified 3,148 superintendents, with 1,825 active in the profession today. CGCSs represent 25 percent of GCSAA’s Class A members.
The annual GCSAA Certification Luncheon, sponsored in partnership with Syngenta, provides the venue for recognizing all CGCSs. Along with the 25-year anniversary celebrants, members of the newly certified Class of 2008 were recognized, as well as those reaching 15-, 20-, 30- and 35+-year anniversaries. The Feb. 6 event also featured a keynote address by Mike Schmidt, former Philadelphia Phillies third-baseman and MLB Hall of Fame member.
