Michigan GCSA members celebrate new beginnings and past leadership

Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2008, was an historic day for golf course superintendents in Michigan. It marked the inaugural Michigan Golf Course Superintendents Association (MiGCSA) Annual Meeting. The event, which preceded a gala celebration for its members, was conducted within the annual Great Lakes Trade Expo held in Grand Rapids, MI.

Ninety-eight individuals attended the annual meeting, held at the DeVos Center. Attendees heard updates and reports from various committees, including communications, membership and finance. In addition, questions were answered regarding the future of the MiGCSA.

The group is led by President John Fulling, CGCS of Kalamazoo Country Club. The board consists of strong leadership from the previous four chapters, including Greater Detroit, Mid Michigan, Northern Michigan and Western Michigan. These previous chapters are now unaffiliated districts, but their activities and events will run consistently as they have in the past. The districts have committees, made up of hard working individuals responsible for coordinating education and vital member services to their constituents.

Ultimately a single affiliated chapter brings members from the state together, to confront difficult issues that affect all facilities in Michigan. The MiGCSA has also hired professional staff, assisting in the day-to-day operations. The MiGCSA board will establish policies and procedures; professional staff will execute these efforts.

John Fulling, CGCS, summed up the extraordinary effort everyone put into the undertaking by saying, “The six years that I invested in this project were the most personally and professionally productive of my adult life, and I was but a small part of the big picture. From the very start there were others who were there working very hard. First we had to decide if this was the right thing to do. Once that decision was made, we made it happen. We learned from one another and we supported one another.”

To kick off the formation of the new chapter, over 200 individuals attended the MiGCSA Gala. The event was only the beginning of the networking and camaraderie that MiGCSA members will share in the future. The chapter “kick off” was a tremendous success. Drinks, food and fun were in play! In addition, an initial MiGCSA board member, Tom Mason, who recently retired from the Birmingham Country Club, was honored with the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation Meritorious Service Award. Jim Timmerman, CGCS and GCSAA Past President (1984) presented the award to Mason.
