Chapter Resources

Membership

Members are the reason your chapter exists. They shape the personality of your association and help define your chapter’s purpose. Members influence the programs, services and benefits you offer. Associations are challenged with retaining and involving members, as well as attracting new members. This section provides tools and information to support chapters in these efforts.

Key Elements of Membership Development
Develop a well-rounded action plan that incorporates the following five elements of membership development:

1. Prospecting – the gathering, targeting and qualifying of names of prospective members for your association
2. Recruitment – asking prospects to join; bringing in the new members
3. Orientation – introducing the new member to the benefits and value of membership and services available through your chapter, as well as introducing him/her to other members
4. Engagement – involving your members in the chapter ultimately enhances member satisfaction
5. Renewal – notifying members of their upcoming renewal, and securing their renewal payment. This is your indication of whether or not the member perceives the inherent value of chapter membership and whether your chapter has met the member’s expectations
