First Hand First Tee Experience

David J. Peru II

David J. Peru II is the Golf Course Superintendent/Facility Manager at the World of Sports Golf Course in Florence, KY, home of The First Tee of Greater Cincinnati. He’s worked at the facility since he was nineteen years old.  David attended Eastern Kentucky University as a history/education major. He began working at World of Sports part time during the summer before returning to school. The summer of 2000 he was offered more money to stay on to oversee the golf course while the superintendent was on medical leave. That following year the superintendent took a position at another golf course and David was offered his position.

He continues his education by attending local turf conferences in Kentucky and Ohio along with courses available through GCSAA and the industry. He was promoted to facility’s manager in May 2006. David says his position has broadened his perspective of the golf industry.

David’s main role with The First Tee staff is to coordinate areas of the golf course reserved for student activities. He began working with kids when his facility was asked to host a Junior Golf Program which is now an annual summer event. The event has at least 400 students participating.

David feels the most rewarding aspect to The First Tee program is their approach to teaching life skills in relation with teaching the game of golf.

He advises other superintendents who want to get involved to plan appropriately. Have space available and be sure to separate the program from day to day business.
