PHOTO A: This photo dates back almost 50 years to when my father, Tom Mascaro, was visiting a golf course in New England, and he and the superintendent came upon this large brown area on an approach to one of the greens. My father made the remark that he should fix that area, and the superintendent replied, “I can’t.” When asked why, the superintendent replied, “Because it’s a car.” As it turned out, when the course was constructed, someone pushed an old car that was on the property into this hole to use as fill in front of the green. This is a classic example that shows that you never can be quite sure about what is causing your problems unless you dig a hole.

PHOTO B: Now that fall is under way, I had to include a picture of frost damage. This golf course had a late frost May 21, 2006, that developed during sunrise, an hour after the greensmowers began cutting. The superintendent reported that the frustrating part of this was that the frost was very light and actually felt like it was half frost, half dew.

Temperatures were between 34 and 35 degrees at the maintenance facility. In addition, the strange thing was that the damage occurred mainly to the collars and rough. They had no damage to the greens and limited damage to fairways. The worst damage happened to greens out in the open, with no damage to green areas that had trees around them. The damage lasted about one week.
