PHOTO A: This photo dates back almost 50 years
to when my father, Tom Mascaro, was visiting a golf course in New
England, and he and the superintendent came upon this large brown
area on an approach to one of the greens. My father made the remark
that he should fix that area, and the superintendent replied, “I
can’t.” When asked why, the superintendent replied,
“Because it’s a car.” As it turned out, when the
course was constructed, someone pushed an old car that was on the
property into this hole to use as fill in front of the green. This
is a classic example that shows that you never can be quite sure
about what is causing your problems unless you dig a hole.
