GCM's Ask the Experts

Answers:

PHOTO A: The brown areas on this college stadium field were created during a Dave Matthews Band concert held at the University of Colorado’s Folsom Field in Boulder four weeks before the first football scrimmage game of 2001 and six weeks before the first televised game. Even though the entire surface of the field was protected with either plywood or commercial-grade temporary flooring, the after effects are easily seen. The area in the foreground is where the stage footers were on plywood blocks, and the larger brown area near the center of the field is the area directly in front of the stage. The remainder of the field was used for floor seating. The field was revitalized by solid-tine aerifying four times during the six-week window. The crew also used a 2-inch spike roller to drop pre-germinated seed into the existing turf on eight different occasions. They haven’t had another concert on the field, but there is talk about bringing the band back.

PHOTO B: The holes on this newly seeded tee are a result of deer damage. Apparently, some deer found this newly seeded tee too much fun to pass up. In addition to walking across the area, they also were able to spend some quality time rooting around with their noses, causing a little extra damage for the superintendent. Deer are abundant on many golf courses and control is not easy. Fences provide the best protection, but typically are impractical and often members like wildlife on the course. Superintendents have tried deterrents ranging from border collies to odor-based deer repellents and even using organic fertilizers. Even motion sensors that activate audiotapes of dogs barking have been tried. Some of the newest technology in the business is an ultrasound deer deterrent system as well as an automated deer “scarecrow.” This I have to see.
